Annual Carbon Capture & Storage Conference

This week, Luke Myer MP, Member of Parliament for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, attended the annual conference of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) in his role as Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS). The event brought together key figures from industry, government, and academia at a critical time for the future of carbon capture in the UK.

Speaking at the conference, Luke emphasised the pivotal role that Teesside is playing in the government’s long-term investment in carbon capture technology. The government recently announced £21.7bn over 25 years for investment in the technology on Teesside and Merseyside. With thousands of quality local jobs on the horizon, he highlighted the enormous potential for economic growth that CCUS projects will bring to the region.

Luke said:

“There is a real feeling of excitement among the CCUS sector that this government is finally delivering long-term investment in this industry. Teesside is right at the heart, with thousands of jobs on the way.”

While the sector was very positive about the government’s new announcement, Luke also urged further action. Speaking at the conference, he called for progress on Track 1 Expansion and Track 2 projects, with a clear roadmap to ensure the swift rollout of these initiatives.

As the MP for an area central to the UK’s industrial decarbonisation strategy, Luke has been a strong advocate for CCUS, consistently highlighting the benefits for Teesside’s economy. The region is set to be a major hub for green jobs, with carbon capture offering a pathway to securing long-term employment and sustainability in local industries.

Luke’s role at the CCSA conference reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Teesside remains at the forefront of the UK’s green industrial revolution. As the government continues to invest in CCUS, Teesside’s future as a leader in clean energy looks brighter than ever.
