Cost of living support helps local pensioners with winter bills

19 February 2026

Households across Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland have received Cold Weather Payments following the recent cold snap, with every part of the constituency covered.

The £25 payments are made automatically to eligible pensioners and low-income households when temperatures fall to zero degrees or below for seven consecutive days. Postcode districts across all of south Middlesbrough, Guisborough and East Cleveland were all included in the trigger area, meaning eligible residents across the constituency have now received the payment without needing to apply.

The support forms part of wider cost-of-living help being delivered this winter. Nationally, more than £35 million has been paid out so far from the Labour Government to help vulnerable households stay warm during freezing conditions.

Cold Weather Payments are targeted at those most in need, including people receiving Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Income Support, and Employment and Support Allowance. Payments are issued automatically, ensuring support reaches households quickly during periods of severe cold.

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Pat McFadden said:

“Combined with our wider cost of living support – including a higher National Living Wage, £150 off energy bills, and a £300 Winter Fuel Payment for over nine million pensioners – these measures are making a real difference to households across the country.”
