Today (14 July 2026) a major plan to protect the future of Cowbar has been approved by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, paving the way for work to safeguard the village’s only road access as coastal erosion continues to threaten the area.

It follows Luke Myer MP’s site visit to Cowbar and Staithes in May last year, where he and the council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Cllr Carl Quartermain saw the impact of coastal erosion firsthand and discussed with officers the long-term options for protecting the community.

The Staithes & Cowbar Coastal Strategy will see a phased realignment of Cowbar Lane, the only road serving Cowbar Cottages and properties on the northern side of Staithes Harbour. The route is also vital for emergency services, the RNLI lifeboat station and Yorkshire Water infrastructure.

Phase 1, estimated to cost over £1 million, will now move forward as Luke pushes for funding from the Environment Agency and other partners. Realigning the road will maintain access for residents and critical infrastructure, while allowing the coastline to continue changing naturally. It also gives residents as much time as possible in their homes, with future phases planned over coming decades rather than requiring immediate large-scale changes.
