Today (19 March 2026), Luke Myer MP has welcomed the Government’s new Steel Strategy, calling it a major step towards protecting British industry, backing skilled jobs and making sure more of the steel used in the UK is made here at home.
The strategy, announced today, includes up to £2.5 billion of support for the sector, a target for up to 50 per cent of the steel used in Britain to be made in Britain, and new trade measures from 1 July to curb unfair imports. It also confirms support for cleaner steelmaking, stronger domestic supply chains and more use of British steel in major projects.
Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle said the plan would help “strengthening and sustaining Britain as a steel-making nation”.
The package has also been welcomed by industry body UK Steel and trade union Community union, both of which said the trade measures are a significant step forward for the industry.
Luke, who serves as Chair of the cross-party APPG on Steel & Metals-Related Industries, has consistently pushed for stronger action on steel since entering Parliament. Since 2024, has argued in Parliament that steel is “not a sunset industry”, called for greater state intervention, and pressed ministers to back British steel in defence, clean energy and infrastructure.
Speaking in Parliament, Luke Myer MP said:
“What a contrast with the Government of just over a decade ago which ripped the heart out of my region. This Government finally has a strategy, after many – I welcome it, but what’s more, so do industry too, and speaking to them this week, they strongly welcome the particularly on procurement and trade. This is a Government on the side of British steelworkers.
“But energy costs remain one of the biggest issues for the industry – and while I have heard what the Secretary of State has said today about the [British Industry] Supercharger, but even after the Supercharger, there will still be an energy price gap with many of our competitors. What more can we do to make sure we reduce these gaps for our industry and make sure we protect jobs years into the future?”
Responding, Secretary of State Peter Kyle said:
“The workers at Skinningrove have a true advocate in him in this place. I can reassure him that the work we have done on the supercharger will make a tangible difference to the workers and the sustainability of that plant. I can also reassure him that this is a Government who act when we have to. We are in constant touch with the steel industry. We are on its side. We are working with it to create a sustainable industry into the future.”
Luke is committed to continuing to work to ensure steel remains a strategic national asset for our economy, our national security, and for skilled jobs in places like Teesside.
“There is still more to do, especially on industrial electricity prices, but this is welcome progress and I am glad to see the Government taking steel seriously.”
