Local aviation fuel industry taking off

Today (25 March 2026) Luke Myer MP met again with Alfanar for further talks on the next stage of its landmark Lighthouse Green Fuels project, a £2bn project bringing hundreds of jobs to Teesside.

Luke and Stockton North MP and Industry Minister Chris McDonald discussed with Alfanar’s team their progress on their planned new Seal Sands site. The project is expected to turn waste wood and agricultural residues into sustainable aviation fuel, with the potential to support around 2,000 construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs once fully up and running.

The meeting is the latest in a long line of engagement from Luke, who visited Alfanar’s site shortly after being elected and has repeatedly raised the importance of sustainable aviation fuel in Parliament. He previously pushed ministers on the need for a Revenue Certainty Mechanism to give investors the confidence to back Teesside projects, which was agreed. Treasury ministers recognised the work of Luke and other Labour MPs in the region in doing so, recognising that they “campaigned hard for investment into their area” (Hansard, 29 Jan 2025).

Luke Myer MP said:

“Alfanar have serious plans for Teesside, and I’ve been backing this project for a long time because it represents exactly the kind of skilled industrial jobs we need here in our region. Sustainable aviation fuel can be a huge part of Teesside’s future. We have the sites, the skills and the industrial base to lead the way.

“The government has made real progress, particularly on the Revenue Certainty Mechanism, but now we need to keep moving. If we want projects like this to get built, we need to give investors confidence and get the next steps in place quickly.”
