Luke Myer, Member of Parliament for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, recently visited Freebrough Academy in Brotton to meet with Principal Michael Garthwaite, staff, and students. Freebrough is Luke’s former school, and he was proud to return to discuss inclusive and high-quality education and students’ achievements.
During the visit, Principal Garthwaite outlined the academy’s ethos of mutual respect and its dedication to positive reinforcement. Initiatives such as “Applause on the Doors” and the use of “Proud” books encourage students to take pride in their accomplishments, creating a vibrant culture of praise and recognition.
As one of the Northern Education Trust schools (NET), Freebrough Academy places a strong emphasis on core subjects including English, Mathematics, Geography, History, and Science, while also nurturing creativity through guided pathways in Art. The Trust’s 80/20 approach ensures 80% of the curriculum aligns with other NET schools, while the remaining 20% allows for tailored practices that best serve East Cleveland.
Freebrough Academy is equally committed to student well-being, offering inclusive support through facilities such as The Bridge. This space helps students address individual challenges, build self-esteem, and receive targeted assistance. The academy also benefits from Teaching Assistant support in the hub and sensory room, ensuring every child feels valued and supported.
In discussing the academy’s achievements, Principal Garthwaite highlighted its strong academic results, with students performing 10% higher than the Redcar & Cleveland average in English and Maths. He added,
“Our aim is to ensure that every child feels safe, respected, and inspired to achieve their very best. This is a school where students thrive because of the hard work and commitment of both staff and pupils.”
Luke Myer MP praised the academy for its efforts, stating,
“It’s clear that Freebrough Academy is providing an exceptional environment where students can succeed and feel supported. The focus on recognising achievements and preparing young people for their futures is truly inspiring. I want local children to know that they can achieve their dreams right here, and that their opportunities don’t have to take them away from our community.”
The visit concluded with a special “Proud” award ceremony, where Luke Myer MP presented students Faith Thompson and Hanadi El Daoor with special achievement awards for hard work.
