Luke Myer MP welcomed DeaflympicsGB and UK Deaf Sport to Parliament this week, celebrating the achievements of deaf athletes and renewing his call for fairer support for Deaflympics competitors.
The event came after Team GB’s record-breaking performance at the 2025 Deaflympics in Tokyo, where the team won 12 medals. Among them was East Cleveland swimmer Mia Wiseman, from Easington, who secured a silver medal after years of dedication and support from her family, coaches and Loftus Dolphins ASC.
Earlier this year, Luke recognised Mia’s achievements with a motion in Parliament, congratulating her on her success and highlighting the contribution of Loftus Dolphins ASC and the wider East Cleveland community to her sporting journey. He also called on the Government to ensure deaf and hard-of-hearing young people have equitable and accessible opportunities to compete at the highest level, as Deaflympics athletes do not currently receive the same level of public funding as Olympic and Paralympic competitors.
Luke Myer MP said:
“It was a pleasure to welcome DeaflympicsGB and UK Deaf Sport to Parliament and celebrate the incredible achievements of Team GB.
“I was especially proud to congratulate Mia once again after her outstanding silver medal for Great Britain. Everyone at Loftus Dolphins ASC, her family and the wider East Cleveland community should be enormously proud of what she has achieved.
“Deaf athletes deserve the opportunity to fulfil their potential just like anyone else. I will continue supporting efforts to ensure talented deaf and hard-of-hearing young people can access the support they need to compete on the world stage.”
