Hundreds of skilled Teesside jobs are moving closer after talks in Parliament led by local MP Luke Myer.

Working with the Carbon Capture & Storage Association, Luke brought together industry leaders, ministers and apprentices for discussions in Parliament on carbon capture – one of the biggest new industries coming to Teesside following the Labour Government’s decision to move ahead with £4bn investment in the region. At the heart of the meeting were two young apprentices, Sophie and Sarah, who started working on the project with BP in September. They are part of the next generation set to benefit from billions of pounds of investment for Teesside as the region builds the UK’s first CO₂ transport and storage network.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks joined Luke at the event, meeting apprentices and hearing directly from businesses about the opportunities ahead. In a follow-up meeting with Minister Shanks this afternoon, Luke pressed hard on the barriers facing local firms including grid capacity, slow connections and high energy costs. The Minister agreed to take the issue away, and promised that further action on industrial energy costs would be imminent.

Luke Myer MP also met with Secretary of State for Business & Trade Peter Kyle today, where they discussed energy, defence manufacturing, and the future of British steel. In all discussions, Luke was clear that Teesside stands ready to deliver new jobs and industries.
