Luke congratulates young people on results

20 August 2026

Luke Myer MP has been out and about across our area this summer congratulating hundreds of young people collecting their exam results. The local MP visited five schools and colleges over the two results days, including a return to both his old secondary school and his old college.

On A-level, T-level and BTEC results day last week, Luke visited Prior Pursglove College in Guisborough, King’s Academy Sixth Form in Coulby Newham and Trinity Catholic College in Middlesbrough. He met students of all backgrounds progressing to universities, apprenticeships, employment and further study.

Among those Luke met was Mattys from Prior Pursglove, who is heading into a degree apprenticeship with Teesside-based technology innovation company CPI.

At Trinity, Luke congratulated students including Lexi, Millie and Summer, who all achieved Distinction* grades and are now heading to Teesside University to study healthcare courses.

Today, for GCSE results day, Luke visited his old secondary school Freebrough Academy in Brotton, as well as Laurence Jackson School in Guisborough and King’s Academy in Coulby Newham.

Among the pupils celebrating was Dylan, who achieved a remarkable set of top grade 9s and will now continue his studies at Prior Pursglove.

Nationally, the Labour Government as set an ambition for two-thirds of young people to progress either to university or a gold-standard apprenticeship. The Government is pushing to give technical and vocational education the same status as traditional academic routes, and expanding apprenticeships and technical education, investing in further education and developing new vocational qualifications.

Luke Myer MP said:

“There have been some brilliant results across our area, and it has been fantastic to get out and congratulate so many young people in person. Whatever your results, well done on all your hard work – and remember there are lots of different pathways to success.

“Here on Teesside, we have an excellent University and FE colleges, but we also have some of the biggest opportunities of the next decade in engineering, manufacturing, construction and clean energy. We need to make sure our young people have every possible route into those good jobs.

“A massive congratulations to everyone who received their results this summer, and to the teachers, support staff and families who helped them get there. We’ve got a brilliant next generation coming through on Teesside and they should be really proud of themselves.”
