Luke discusses Octopus Interceptor production

Today (10th February 2026), Luke Myer MP met with Ministry of Defence officials to discuss the next steps for the UK’s involvement in Project Octopus, a major initiative that could bring jobs to Teesside and save lives in Ukraine.

The Octopus-100, a small AI-powered interceptor designed to destroy Russian Shahed-type drones, is set to become a cornerstone of Ukraine’s air defence strategy. Developed in Ukraine and built in the UK, the Octopus interceptors are expected to scale up production to a rate of thousands per month. The interceptors are effective against low-flying threats, and capable of operating under electronic jamming – making them an invaluable asset to counter Russia’s growing drone threats and protect Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.

Luke has long championed Teesside’s potential to lead in defence manufacturing, having previously advocated for increased investment in the region’s defence sector. During the meeting, Luke discussed how Teesside’s manufacturing sector could play a crucial role in scaling up production of these cutting-edge interceptors. With the UK government’s commitment to bolstering defence production, this could mean more local jobs and skills.

As the Octopus interceptors begin to roll off the production line, Luke is determined that Teesside will be involved in delivering this crucial technology – strengthening both local jobs and global security.

Luke Myer MP said:

“Teesside has a proud history of supporting the national defence effort, and with projects like Project Octopus, we have the opportunity to strengthen our industrial base while contributing to national security.”
