Luke Myer MP has fought for a local veteran to secure a decent home after he was left sleeping on the floor for over a year so that his children could have a bed. He was repeatedly overlooked for suitable properties and pushed from one provider to another.
Luke took up his case with Redcar & Cleveland Council, local housing providers, and raised it directly in Parliament, pressing Ministers on their promise of “homes for heroes”.
“I welcome the Government’s commitment to provide homes for heroes, but some social housing providers are focusing on those with very recent service only. My constituent Arthur is a veteran with 12 years’ service, but he is living in an overcrowded property; in fact, he is sleeping on the floor in the living room so that his children can have a bed. Will the Leader of the House ensure that I can obtain a meeting with the relevant Minister so that veterans like Arthur get the housing they need?”
Hansard, 17th July 2025
After months of back-and-forth, Beyond Housing finally admitted last month that they had overlooked Arthur’s family for a three-bedroom home and agreed that they would receive a priority offer on the next suitable property.
A new address has now been confirmed, and Luke is pushing to ensure the hand-over is completed in good time and Arthur and his family are able to move into the secure, settled home they deserve.
The case is just one of the thousands Luke and his team deal with, and it highlights serious failings in how veterans are treated. Luke will continue to support the family and fight for a system that actually lives up to its promises.
