More than 3,500 visits in just one year! That’s the milestone celebrated at Maggie’s Middlesbrough, where local MP Luke Myer joined staff and volunteers today to mark the charity’s first birthday.
Based next to the Endeavour Unit at James Cook University Hospital, Maggie’s provides free emotional, practical and financial support to people affected by cancer and their families. Since March, its benefits adviser has helped patients access over £309,000 in grants and financial assistance.
Luke met the team earlier today to hear about their work and the difference they’re making locally. He has previously raised cancer care inequalities in Parliament, backed investment in cancer treatment at James Cook. The hospital has received state-of-the-art new scanners from the Labour Government, along with £750,000 to recruit at least 10 additional therapeutic radiographers, helping expand cancer treatment capacity. Luke has also backed campaigns for breast, cervical and prostate cancer patients, and supported local cancer and hospice charities.
Luke Myer MP said:
“A cancer diagnosis can turn your whole world upside down. It’s not just the treatment, but the worry and the impact on your family. Maggie’s is doing fantastic work helping people through some of the toughest moments of their lives. It was lovely to meet the people making such a difference here on Teesside.”
Centre Head Michelle Holmes said:
“We’ve had an exceptional first year surpassing over 3,500 visits from people with cancer and their family and friends, which clearly highlights the demand for support across Middlesbrough and the wider area.”
“This milestone would not have been possible without the strong partnership we’ve built with our clinical colleagues in the NHS, alongside the generous support from local business Carlton Power and The Hospitals Charity. This collaboration enables us to fill in the gaps to provide benefits and financial advice, emotional and psychological support and guidance throughout treatment and beyond.”
Maggie’s is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with no appointment needed. Find out more at maggies.org/middlesbrough.
