Luke helps push through tougher rules on dangerous homes

Landlords who leave tenants living in dangerous conditions face tougher rules, after Luke Myer MP helped move new housing safety regulations through Parliament.

Today (Monday 19 October), Luke served on a Parliamentary committee considering changes to Awaab’s Law and electrical safety standards. The new regulations will extend Awaab’s Law beyond damp and mould to cover dangerous electrics, extreme temperatures, fire risks and structural hazards.

Social landlords will face legally enforceable deadlines to investigate and tackle serious dangers, giving tenants stronger powers to hold them to account.

The move builds on Luke’s wider campaigning for stronger housing rights, including his work challenging dodgy landlords, pushing social housing providers for improvements, and holding management companies to account.

Luke Myer MP said:

“Nobody in Middlesbrough or East Cleveland should have to live in a home that’s putting their health or safety at risk.

“Tenants deserve proper protections, not endless excuses. These changes will help make sure landlords take responsibility and put things right.”
