Local MP Luke Myer has brought together key partners today to discuss crime and antisocial behaviour in Coulby Newham.
The meeting brought together local PCC Matt Storey and Cllr David Branson for Coulby Newham, alongside representatives from Cleveland Police, Thirteen Housing and the Middlesbrough Council Neighbourhoods Team.
While the primary focus was on recent crime and antisocial behaviour that has taken place in Coulby Newham, the discussion also covered trends across south Middlesbrough more widely, with partners sharing intelligence and coordinating their response across neighbouring communities – particularly around the Parkway Centre and nearby estates.
It comes as Cleveland Police continues to expand neighbourhood policing, with 48 additional officers and PCSOs now deployed across the force area as part of the Government’s drive to get more officers back on the beat. Strategies used were discussed and assessed: including increased visible patrols, new rapid deployment teams and strengthened engagement with businesses and residents in the local area.
Police and partners set out the work already underway to tackle antisocial behaviour, including targeted patrols in hotspot areas, regular visits to local businesses, and the use of CCTV to help identify those responsible. A permanent CCTV camera is planned for Dalby Way, alongside further temporary cameras to respond to issues as they arise.
Wider challenges were also discussed, including a rise in shop theft, ongoing problems with off road bikes, and concerns about antisocial behaviour linked to some privately rented properties where it can be harder to take action.
MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, Luke Myer said:
“Putting 48 new neighbourhood officers on the beat in Cleveland Police is a really positive step and something local people have been calling for, but we know there is more to do. We only get on top of antisocial behaviour when everyone works as one team. Local police, the council, housing associations and local communities all have a role to play, and meetings like this are how we make that happen.”
Councillor for Coulby Newham, David Branson said:
“Residents have raised concerns about hotspots like Longhurst and Dalby Way, as well as wider issues like off-road bikes and problems linked to some privately rented properties. It is important that partners keep working together and have the powers needed to deal with serious antisocial behaviour.”
Further meetings with partners and local businesses are planned as part of ongoing work to drive down crime and improve safety across Coulby Newham and south Middlesbrough.
