Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Luke Myer joined veterans, cadets, civic leaders and residents at Middlesbrough Cenotaph today (14 September 2025) for a service marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
The annual Parade and Service was organised by 1869 (Middlesbrough) Squadron Air Cadets, supported by 2394 East Cleveland Squadron ATC, Middlesbrough Council, the Royal British Legion and others. The RAF Ensign is also flying over Middlesbrough Town Hall this week in commemoration of those who served.
The Battle of Britain took place between July and September 1940, when the German air force sought to gain air superiority over the RAF. Its failure was a decisive turning point in the Second World War, preventing invasion and securing Britain’s freedom.
Speaking after the service, Luke Myer MP said:
“It was moving to stand with veterans, cadets and our community in remembrance of those who fought for our freedoms in the Battle of Britain. Eighty five years on, we again live in a dangerous world, with autocrats and populists seeking to erode democracy. The courage of those who stood firm in 1940 continues to inspire us today.”
The service was also attended by Middlesbrough & Thornaby East MP Andy McDonald, Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke, councillors and other community representatives.
