Boro fan group funding raised in Parliament
12 May 2025 : Westminster
Luke Myer, Member of Parliament for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, has raised concerns in Parliament about the financial pressures facing a vital local organisation, the Middlesbrough Disabled Supporters Association (MDSA24), due to rising banking charges.
Speaking in Parliament Luke Myer MP said: “Middlesbrough Disabled Supporters Association do vital work to support disabled Boro fans, but they are currently being hammered by increased bank charges. So will the Disability Minister work across Government to help take these banks to task so that non-profit disability groups such as this can continue their important work?”
The MDSA24 works to ensure better access for disabled fans at Middlesbrough Football Club, playing a crucial role in promoting inclusion and fairness in local sport. However, the group, who have their AGM in July, is facing mounting costs due to increased transaction charges and monthly fees imposed by banks.
Luke Myer MP said: “Groups like the Middlesbrough Disabled Supporters Association do outstanding work, often run by volunteers, to make sure disabled people can participate fully in community life. They should be supported, not squeezed by unfair bank charges. I will keep fighting to make sure these vital organisations get the backing they need.”
MDSA24 said: “We are grateful to Luke for raising this issue in Parliament for us. MDSA24 is working to improve matchday experiences for all fans with disabilities, as well as carers. Banks should not be penalising us for that. We hope Lloyds Bank will reconsider the way they approach not for profits and charity organisations like Middlesbrough Disabled Supporters Association 24.”
