Luke supports Teesside Hospice

11 August 2026

Luke Myer MP has pledged to keep making the case for sustainable hospice funding, after visiting Teesside Hospice and meeting its Chief Executive Mike Thornicroft.

Luke toured the hospice in Middlesbrough to see the support it provides for patients and families, from specialist palliative care to bereavement counselling and other services helping people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

During the visit, Luke and Mike discussed hospice funding, as well as political discussions underway on assisted dying and the Casey Review into social care. They discussed the future of social care and the importance of making sure palliative care is properly represented in wider reforms to the care system.

Teesside Hospice plays a vital role supporting people across the local area, providing specialist end-of-life care alongside wider emotional and practical support for patients and their families.

Luke has previously supported calls for stronger funding for hospices and welcomed the additional Government support announced for the sector. He said it was important that hospices have the long-term certainty they need to plan services and continue supporting families.

Luke Myer MP said:

“Teesside Hospice is an incredible local institution, supporting people and families at the moments when they need it most.

“What really struck me during the visit was not only the quality of the palliative care, but the wider support they provide, including counselling and help for bereaved families.

“Hospices are a hugely important part of our health and care system, and I want to see them given the stability and support they need for the future. I’ll keep making the case for hospice and palliative care in Parliament and with Ministers.”
