Luke Myer MP joined the UK Labour Government’s Minister for Reindustrialisation Blair McDougall this week to celebrate the opening of BOC’s new carbon dioxide (CO₂) facility at North Tees, marking another major investment by one of Teesside’s longest-established industrial businesses.
The new facility, built alongside BOC’s existing hydrogen plant in Stockton-on-Tees, will capture and purify thousands of tonnes of CO₂ each year for use in food production, healthcare, water treatment and manufacturing. It will strengthen Britain’s domestic supply, reducing reliance on imports and protecting businesses from shortages.
BOC has been part of Teesside for more than a century, beginning in 1923 when its first customer collected oxygen in three Thermos flasks on a handcart. Today, its extensive pipeline network continues to support industries across Teesside. The new facility demonstrates the continuing importance of Teesside to Britain’s industrial resilience and economic security.
The opening comes amid wider investment in Teesside’s CO₂ industry. Earlier this year, the Labour Government provided £100 million to support the reopening of the Ensus bioethanol plant, another important source of domestic CO₂. The Government is also progressing major carbon capture and storage infrastructure through the East Coast Cluster at Wilton. As chair of Parliament’s cross-party carbon capture group of MPs, Luke has consistently championed Teesside industry, supply chains and skilled jobs.
Luke Myer MP said:
“Teesside helped build modern Britain, and we should be at the heart of rebuilding British industry. It’s fantastic to see BOC investing here and backing our industrial future.
“We’re taking something that would otherwise go to waste, turning it into a valuable product and strengthening Britain’s supply chains. That’s good for local industry, good for jobs and good for our country’s economic security.”
“Congratulations to the whole team at BOC on this milestone, and the work they do in our region 24/7.”
Minister for Reindustrialisation Blair McDougall said:
“In an increasingly uncertain world, Britain needs secure supplies of CO2 for everything from food production to healthcare, and BOC’s new facility strengthens our economic security while supporting good local jobs.
“Teesside is an industrial hotspot, and investments like these are exactly what our reindustrialisation mission is all about: backing the sectors crucial to our industrial resilience and driving growth and jobs in the areas that need them.”
