New Loftus sports facility plans approved

23 September 2024

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Labour cabinet has approved plans for a landmark new sports facility for East Cleveland.

The brand-new facility at the council-owned Ben Scott’s Field in Loftus is a partnership with the MFC Foundation and will include a community provision, a new 3G full-size pitch, and a 54-space car park.

The facility is part-funded by the Foundation, and the remainder of the funding is being sought from the Football Foundation and the Government, with decisions expected in 2025. Luke Myer MP has consistently supported the plans, and has raised the benefits of the scheme with the Department for Culture, Media & Sport.

Luke Myer MP said:

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our local community, offering fantastic new facilities that will inspire healthier, more active lifestyles and create opportunities for young people through sport. It’s an investment not just in infrastructure, but in the future of Loftus and the wider area, with long-lasting social and economic benefits.”

Loftus Labour Cllr Linda White said:

“As the local ward councillor for Loftus, I am incredibly excited about the approval of the new sports village. This development will provide fantastic opportunities for our residents, particularly young people, to engage in sport and physical activity right in the heart of our community. It’s a huge boost for Loftus, and I’m proud to see this investment in our town, helping to enhance both our local amenities and community spirit.”

Alec Brown, Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Council said:

“I am delighted to announce the approval of the Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation’s proposal for a sports centre in Loftus. This marks an exciting step forward for our community, enhancing access to sports, fitness, and well-being facilities.”
