Luke Myer MP congratulated Rolls-Royce SMR on being selected as the supplier to build Britain’s first Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). This marks a major milestone in the country’s pursuit of homegrown energy, with Rolls-Royce SMR tasked with constructing three SMRs across the UK.
The development of these reactors will not only provide clean, reliable energy but will also create thousands of high-quality jobs, strengthening the UK’s energy security.
Rolls-Royce SMR Chief Executive, Chris Cholerton, said:
“This is a day to celebrate a milestone achievement. This success is testament to our incredible team which has developed a world-leading technology and worked tirelessly over the last two years to ensure we could provide a winning tender to GBN.
“As well as delivering affordable, clean energy to support our nation’s energy independence – deploying three of our units will drive domestic growth by creating thousands of highly skilled, well-paid jobs and supply chain opportunities. We are the only SMR company with multiple commitments to build projects in Europe, testament to our differentiated design and compelling offer”.
Luke, a consistent supporter of clean power initiatives, sees this as a crucial step in ensuring a sustainable energy future for Britain and for Teesside, a region with a proud industrial history and growing green energy potential.
Luke Myer MP said:
“Congratulations to Rolls-Royce SMR on this fantastic news. This is a win not just for Britain’s energy future, but for our communities. Teesside has the potential to play a key role in the development of Small Modular Reactors, and I have already written to Rolls Royce to encourage them to consider our region for the build. This could mean thousands of new jobs and an important contribution to the UK’s clean energy goals.”
The announcement highlights the UK’s commitment to renewable and nuclear energy solutions, and Luke is working to ensure that Teesside, with its strong industrial base, becomes a key hub for this exciting new chapter in the UK’s energy sector.
Luke will continue to push for Teesside to be at the heart of Britain’s clean power future, creating jobs and investment for the region.
