A local Nunthorpe pensioner has received a £2,909 tax refund after Luke Myer MP stepped in to resolve a long-running dispute with HMRC.
The constituent had been trying to resolve problems with her tax since 2023, after HMRC calculated tax on income she said she had never received. She was eventually faced with a demand for more than £3,000 and began making payments after being warned that the debt could be passed for collection.
Luke took the case directly to HMRC and pressed for the constituent’s tax position to be reviewed. HMRC subsequently acknowledged errors in its handling of the case, corrected the tax calculation and refunded the money that had been overpaid. The constituent’s account showed a refund of £2,909.73, with HMRC also making a separate redress payment for its mistakes and poor service.
The constituent’s daughter thanked Luke for his intervention, saying that “without your input we would still be getting the run around.”
