Redcar & Cleveland Council will receive an extra £4.8 million from the Labour Government after Luke Myer MP, council leader Alec Brown and Redcar MP Anna Turley pushed Ministers for more support for the borough.
The new funding was confirmed today (15 September) as part of a £91m package from the Labour Government to help councils facing some of the toughest financial pressures in the country. Redcar & Cleveland will receive £2.17 million this year and a further £2.63 million next year, subject to progress, with the money focused on transforming expensive services including adult and children’s social care, SEND and temporary accommodation.
It follows sustained lobbying from Luke, Anna and Alec for additional Government support. Cllr Brown wrote directly to Ministers making the case for further support, while Luke and Anna have repeatedly pressed the Government over the financial pressures facing the council.
Luke knows those pressures first-hand. Before entering Parliament, he was part of the Labour administration which took control of Redcar & Cleveland Council in 2023 after years of financial strain. The administration before Labour had ended millions of pounds overspent, had around 1,000 fewer staff than at the beginning of austerity, and had also been hit by a devastating Russian cyberattack costing more than £10m.
Since his election to Parliament in 2024, Luke has continued to push for more investment into the borough. That has included campaigning for a fairer council funding system, with Redcar & Cleveland now set to receive over £45 million more over three years, alongside investment in SEND, family services and children’s care. Today’s £4.8 million award is specifically intended to help tackle some of the high-cost services putting the greatest pressure on the council’s finances.
