British Steel is taking on an additional 45 employees as it prepares to increase production at its Special Profiles Mill in Skinningrove, East Cleveland.
The expansion follows the Government’s intervention to safeguard the future of British Steel earlier this year, including a financial support package and measures to stabilise energy costs for the company. This action provided certainty for the business and its workforce, ensuring production could continue at key sites like Skinningrove. With that security in place, British Steel has had the confidence to invest, expand, and create new jobs in East Cleveland.
From 30th November, the plant will move from a 15 shift operation to a 21 shift pattern, a significant step forward in securing more high quality industrial jobs in the region.
The Special Profiles Mill at Skinningrove produces a wide range of hot rolled steel profiles used in sectors including mining, construction equipment, material handling and shipbuilding. Two major customers also operate downstream manufacturing plants on the British Steel site, forming an integrated and resilient local supply chain.
Recruitment is already underway. The first intake of new recruits will start in a matter of weeks, with further intakes planned over the next three months.
The roles on offer come with extensive training and provide a valuable opportunity to gain experience at one of the area’s leading advanced manufacturing sites. Skinningrove recently completed a £26 million investment in a new service centre, introducing advanced automation to improve productivity and product quality.
Jason Webb CEng MIMech, Plant Manager at the Skinningrove site, said:
“This is great news, not just for British Steel but for the East Cleveland area as a whole. Being able to take on 45 new manufacturing employees is hugely exciting for us as a business, and it will be great to see the positive impact this will have on the wider community. Output is expected to increase during November and December.”
Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, said:
“This announcement is a major boost for our area. These are good, skilled jobs in a sector that defines our industrial strength. British Steel’s continued investment in Skinningrove is helping to secure long term employment, raise aspirations, and support East Cleveland’s place at the heart of British manufacturing. I will keep working with employers like British Steel to bring even more opportunities to local people.”
British Steel is an Armed Forces friendly employer and actively encourages applications from ex Armed Forces personnel, reservists, Armed Forces veterans and military spouses and partners.
