Prime Minister Andy Burnham has today announced that the Labour Government will establish a National Commission on Electoral Reform, following months of pressure from MPs for a serious review of the way Westminster elections are run.

Luke Myer MP has consistently called for the voting system to be reviewed. In December 2024, he voted in favour of proportional representation, and earlier this year he sponsored amendments calling directly for the National Commission to be established.

Support for looking again at the voting system has grown in recent years. The latest British Social Attitudes survey found 53% of people supported changing the voting system.

Labour is already taking forward some of the biggest changes to our democracy in a generation, including votes at 16 and moves towards automatic voter registration. The Government is also tightening the rules around political donations and foreign interference, while strengthening the Electoral Commission’s enforcement powers.

“Today’s announcement means that the question of making everyone’s vote count will now get the serious, independent examination it deserves.

“The Commission should look properly at the evidence, listen to people across the country and set out clearly what the options would mean in practice. Whatever system we use, people need to be able to trust that our democracy works and that their voice matters.”
