Today (28 September 2026) the Stagecoach 1 and 2 bus services have begun running through Brotton High Street, following a successful campaign by Luke Myer MP, local Brotton councillors, and residents.
The services had previously bypassed the centre of Brotton, leaving many residents isolated, particularly older people and those with mobility issues.
Last year, Luke highlighted this problem in his East Cleveland Growth Plan, and earlier this year, working with the local independent councillors Barry Hunt and Graham Cutler, Luke formally called on the Tees Valley Combined Authority to reroute the 1 and 2 through Brotton High Street as part of his push for better bus connections across East Cleveland. A public protest was organised, and a petition gathered hundreds of signatures.
The campaign was successful and that change has now taken effect, with the Stagecoach 1 and 2 serving Brotton High Street as part of their routes connecting communities including Saltburn, Skelton, East Cleveland Hospital, Skinningrove, Loftus, Liverton Mines, Moorsholm and Lingdale.
The change forms part of Luke’s wider work to improve transport links across East Cleveland, where poor connectivity can make it harder for people to get to work, shops, healthcare and other essential services.
Residents across other East Cleveland villages continue to raise concerns about infrequent, unreliable and cancelled buses. Luke is continuing to press for the Tees Valley bus network to come under greater public control through franchising, which would give the Combined Authority greater control over routes, frequencies and standards. Last year, Luke helped pass new laws in Parliament to help expand the powers available to pursue this approach.

“However, I know people in villages right across East Cleveland are still angry about buses that are too infrequent, unreliable or simply don’t turn up. I’ll keep pushing for better links right across East Cleveland.”
