Crackdown confirmed on social media ‘tax finfluencers’

11 March 2026 — Social media influencers promoting tax avoidance schemes could soon face enforcement action from HMRC after the Government confirmed new powers in the Finance Bill will apply to them, following a cross-party amendment on the issue led by Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy and backed by a small group of MPs including Luke Myer MP.

The amendment raised concerns about so-called “finfluencers” who promote tax avoidance schemes through social media videos and paid content, sometimes leaving ordinary people facing large tax bills and penalties from HMRC. The proposal attracted support from backbench MPs across Parliament, including Labour, Liberal Democrat, Conservative, Green, Alliance and Plaid Cymru representatives, reflecting growing concern about misleading financial content online and its impact on the public.

The measures are intended to help HMRC act more quickly against promoters of tax avoidance schemes and ensure that individuals making money from misleading online advice cannot escape scrutiny.

Luke Myer MP, who backed the amendment, said:

“Too many people are being misled by dodgy online ‘finfluencers’ pushing tax avoidance schemes that can leave them facing huge bills and penalties. I was proud to support Stella’s cross-party amendment to make sure the new crackdown applies to those promoting these schemes.”
