Thousands of people across the North East are being seen faster for back, joint and muscle problems thanks to new NHS support funded by the Labour Government.
The region has significantly higher levels of long-term musculoskeletal problems than the national average, with more than one in five people affected. These conditions are one of the biggest drivers of long-term sickness, limiting people’s ability to stay active, remain in work and live independently.
Backed by £3.5 million from the Labour Government, the major NHS pilot has cut musculoskeletal (MSK) waiting lists in pilot areas by 20%, including by introducing one-stop clinics bringing together physio, mental health and employment support, alongside new digital tools to help people manage conditions at home and get back to work sooner.
The investment builds on earlier funding for the region, where local NHS leaders have been working to reduce waiting times and expand community services. Around £200,000 has already been directed into boosting capacity, helping more people access treatment like physiotherapy faster. Further support through the Government’s Health and Growth Accelerator is now seeing WorkWell advisors embedded in GP practices – offering one-to-one help with health, work and wider challenges like mental health and money worries.
The programme forms part of Labour’s wider plan to cut NHS waiting lists and tackle economic inactivity by linking health and employment support. New neighbourhood health centres, expanded community services and personalised support through Jobcentres are all designed to ensure people are not left behind when illness affects their ability to work.
Luke Myer, Member of Parliament for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, said:
“Too many people in our area are living with pain, stuck on waiting lists and unable to work as a result. This is exactly the kind of practical change we need – getting people seen faster, bringing services together and helping people get back on their feet. Good health and good work go hand in hand, and this investment will make a real difference for families across our communities.”
