Young people quiz their MP on laws, local priorities and the future

This week, Luke Myer MP welcomed four schools from Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland to Westminster for a fascinating day exploring democracy in action. Pupils and staff from Lingdale Primary School, Handale Primary School, Stokesley Sixth Form College and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School all took the chance to quiz their MP and learn about how Parliament works.

During the visit, the pupils discovered how laws are created, what MPs do on a daily basis, and shared their own views on the issues that matter to them, ranging from education to protecting the environment.

Luke Myer was struck by the thoughtful and challenging questions from the students, as well as their obvious passion for making a difference in their communities. He believes the experience highlighted the potential for future leadership among local young people.

“It was brilliant to meet so many bright, enthusiastic pupils from our area. Their questions were sharp and their interest in politics was inspiring. It gives me real hope that our communities will be in good hands in years to come.”
“It was also a chance to talk honestly about the challenges facing our region, and how young people can help shape a fairer, greener future.”
