MP says the right safeguards can give terminally ill adults the freedom to end their suffering

Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, has voted in favour of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill as it passed its Third Reading in the House of Commons, clearing the way for the legislation to move to the House of Lords.
The Bill, one of the most debated and sensitive in recent parliamentary history, would allow terminally ill adults to choose to end their own lives under strictly controlled conditions. It includes a series of legal safeguards and medical oversight intended to ensure protections are in place for all involved.
Luke Myer said:
“This was not a decision made lightly, but one rooted in my belief that, with robust safeguards in place, people who are suffering the pain of terminal illness should have the freedom to choose to end that pain if they wish.
I’ve listened carefully to the range of views and deeply personal stories people have shared with me, and I’m grateful to everyone who took the time to do so. I’ve supported amendments that strengthened the Bill and consistently voted in favour of strong protections.
I know not everyone will agree, but I want to thank our community for the respectful way people have engaged with me on this issue. It’s one of the most historic votes Parliament has seen in years – and I do not take that responsibility lightly. Every day it is a privilege to serve my home, and I’ll continue working to ensure every decision I make reflects the values and needs of our community.”
