Dedicated educator retires after 30 years shaping lives across East Cleveland
30th June 2025, Westminster
Luke Myer MP has paid tribute in Parliament to Douglas Forteath, a beloved educator from Freebrough Academy in Brotton, who is retiring after an impressive 30 years of service.
‘Dougie’ taught Luke when he was a student at Freebrough Academy, and his impact on young people has been felt across East Cleveland for decades.
Dougie Forteath dedicated his entire career to the same group of schools, progressing from science teacher to deputy principal through sheer hard work and commitment. Douglas chose to settle in East Cleveland straight from university, where he never wavered in his belief that every student had the potential to succeed. His work ethic is nothing short of legendary, often putting in long hours from 6am to 7pm, with extra time spent in his office or during weekends, always focused on providing his students with the best possible education.
Luke’s tribute in the House of Commons highlighted the life-changing work that teachers like Dougie do, day in and day out.
Speaking in Parliament, Luke Myer MP said:
“Douglas Forteath, Vice Principal at Freebrough Academy in my constituency, is retiring after 30 years of service as a schoolteacher, including as one of my old teachers when I was there. So, I wonder if the Leader of the House will join me in paying tribute to Douglas for thirty years of educating young people in our constituency and to pay tribute to all teachers across our country.”
In her reply, the Leader of the House, Lucy Powell MP, echoed Luke’s thanks, saying:
“Well, what a fine job Douglas Forteath did! I am sure he is incredibly proud of the fact that one of his former pupils is now a Member of Parliament. I absolutely join in thanking Douglas for a great life of service and for teaching all his wonderful students over the years.”
Luke later said:
“Teachers like Mr. Forteath change lives. They see potential before we see it in ourselves. In classrooms across our community, they do this work day in, day out, with patience, care, and commitment. Thank you, Douglas and thank you to every teacher across Teesside and beyond!”
