Today (19 September 2023), Cabinet Member for Children, Cllr Luke Myer, visited Rigwood House at Saltburn – home to Old Farm School’s second site at Rigwood Cottage, alongside the nearby Rigwood House residential provision.
He met the team to discuss the council’s support for local specialist education to be expanded to meet growing demand for children with social, emotional and mental health needs.
The visit focused on the revamp of Rigwood Cottage, which has been developed to extend Old Farm School’s provision beyond its main site at Kilton Thorpe. As Cabinet Member for Children, Luke met staff and leaders to discuss how the new site will help more young people who have struggled in mainstream settings to re-engage with education in a calm, supportive environment.
Luke also discussed longer-term plans for the site, including the plans to expand provision further into neighbouring property Rigwood House in future years. Luke supports the plans, which have recently been granted planning permission by the council. This phased approach reflects the council’s strategy of working closely with trusted providers to build capacity locally, ensuring children can remain closer to their families and communities rather than being placed out of area.
The visit highlighted the importance of early planning, strong oversight and partnership working in delivering high-quality SEND provision that meets need while offering value for public money.
Cllr Luke Myer said:
“Too many children with complex needs end up being sent miles away from home because the right support isn’t available locally. Seeing the opening of Rigwood Cottage is a positive step in changing that. By working with experienced providers and planning ahead, we can create the right places, in the right settings, with the right support around each child.”
