Luke Myer MP today (2 April 2026) had a confidential briefing with the Minister for the Armed Forces, Al Carns DSO OBE MC, on the fast-moving situation in the Middle East, as the conflict with Iran continues to escalate.
The meeting comes as the UK steps up defensive operations across the region. Public information from the Ministry of Defence confirms that RAF Regiment gunners successfully downed 10 Iranian drones overnight, while around 1,000 British personnel are now deployed across the Middle East to carry out defensive action. UK Typhoon and F-35 jets continue to carry out defensive missions alongside partners, protecting British interests and allies.
Ministers have been clear that the UK will not be drawn into offensive action, nor a wider war. The Prime Minister confirmed yesterday that “this is not our war,” with the Government focusing on de-escalation, protecting global shipping routes, and maintaining stability for British families and businesses at home. At the same time, Britain is strengthening support for Gulf partners, including deploying advanced air defence systems and extending RAF operations in the region.
The situation is already having global economic impacts, particularly on energy markets and industrial supply chains. In recent days, the Government has acted to protect Teesside industry, backing the restart of the Ensus plant in Wilton to safeguard critical CO2 production for sectors including food, healthcare and nuclear. Nonetheless, there will continue to be impacts on supplies of CO2 and ammonia over coming months. Luke will continue to monitor potential impacts on local jobs and industry, and engage with Government on any support necessary.
Teesside’s chemical and industrial base is strategically important to the UK. Ensuring its resilience during global shocks remains a key priority, and Luke is committed to making sure Teesside’s voice is heard as decisions are taken in the national interest.
