Today (2 April 2026), the Government confirmed a major new funding boost for Teesside as part of its plan to back innovation, create jobs and grow the economy, with up to £30 million secured for a landmark clean energy and industrial decarbonisation research programme.

The funding comes through the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Local Innovation Partnerships Fund, delivered by UK Research and Innovation, and forms part of the Government’s record £86 billion investment in R&D to 2030. Teesside will work in partnership with Hull and East Yorkshire, led by Teesside University, to accelerate new technologies that cut emissions, bring down costs and create skilled local jobs.

Ministers say the programme will bring together local businesses, researchers and government to turn Teesside’s industrial strengths into real-world solutions – helping ideas move faster from prototype to market, attracting investment and backing the industries of the future. It builds on the region’s proud industrial heritage while putting Teesside at the forefront of the UK’s clean energy transition.

Local partners will now work with UK Research and Innovation to develop projects that maximise the impact of the funding, supporting new technologies, strengthening supply chains and opening up opportunities for local people and businesses.

UK Science and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said:

“It is a tribute to the pioneering spirit in every corner of our country that we are backing nations and regions across the UK to advance innovation in everything from defence to AI and clean energy to space tech.

“This latest funding will take local expertise to the next level, helping to create jobs and growth from Teesside to Cornwall and build on our backing for local innovation in all 4 nations of the UK. By working with local leaders, researchers, and businesses, we can unleash transformational research and products that improve lives.”

Luke Myer MP said:

“This is another vote of confidence in Teesside and our future. We’ve always been a place that builds things, makes things, and powers the country, and now we’re leading the way again in clean energy and industrial innovation.

“This £30 million investment will help create good, skilled jobs here at home, back our brilliant local businesses and universities, and make sure Teesside is at the forefront of the industries of the future.
