Luke joins cross-party wildfire talks in Parliament

Luke Myer MP today (20 May 2026) joined politicians and experts from across Parliament for the inaugural meeting of a new parliamentary group on wildfires – looking at the growing risk of major moorland fires and what practical action Government can take to prevent them.

The meeting was convened by Alison Hume MP, whose constituency neighbours Luke’s, and brought together MPs and peers from across the political spectrum alongside environmental and emergency response stakeholders. Alongside Labour politicians, those attending included Liberal Democrat MP Angus MacDonald and former Conservative ministers Alister Jack and Robert Douglas-Miller from the Lords.

The discussion comes after the devastating Langdale Forest and Fylingdales Moor wildfire last year, which became the largest fire in the history of the North York Moors National Park. The blaze burned for weeks across moorland near RAF Fylingdales, destroying peatland, closing major walking routes and requiring a huge emergency response involving firefighters, farmers, volunteers and local businesses. During the fires, Luke raised the issue in Parliament, paying tribute to “the firefighters, farmers, volunteers and all the businesses” who came together to tackle the blaze.

Luke Myer MP said:

“It was good to join colleagues from across parties and parts of the country today to look at practical ways we can improve resilience, prevention and coordination as wildfire risks increase.

“Last year’s fires on the North York Moors showed just how serious and destructive these incidents can become, not only for our environment, but for local communities, farms, wildlife and emergency services.
