Young people in Guisborough are set to benefit from major improvements to their local youth centre, after Labour government funding helped deliver a boost to youth facilities.
Allocated by the council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Labour Councillor Bill Suthers, Guisborough Youth Centre has received a series of upgrades through the Better Youth Space programme. The upgrades include new outdoor sensory play equipment, a fully accessible kitchen for young people with disabilities, and a new sensory and relaxation room with mood lighting.
The improvements are designed to give young people safer, more inclusive spaces to socialise, learn new skills and access support from local youth workers. The funding has also supported improved IT equipment, music facilities and activity spaces at youth centres elsewhere across the borough. The investment comes as the Labour government continues to place a renewed focus on youth services and opportunities for young people, after years of cuts to community facilities across the country.
Cllr Bill Suthers said youth centres played a “vital role” in supporting young people and helping them build confidence, friendships and aspirations for the future.
“Youth Centres are such an important asset to our area. They help build confidence, support wellbeing, encourage friendships, and give young people the opportunity to develop skills and aspirations for the future. They play a vital role by providing safe, inclusive spaces where young people can connect, grow, and access support when they need it most.
“I am incredibly grateful to all our youth workers for the unbelievable work they do every day to support our younger generations, and equally excited to see our loved Youth Centres benefitting from this significant investment.”
As well as the new facilities, youth workers at the centre continue to provide advice, wellbeing support and access to services including the C-Card scheme.
Luke has worked closely with the council to deliver better youth and family services across East Cleveland, ranging from Family Hubs to free breakfast clubs.
