Luke keeps up pressure on fleecehold scandal

Luke Myer MP has taken the fight on “fleecehold” straight to the top — confronting the Housing Minister in a face-to-face meeting today (22 April 2026) and demanding action for homeowners hit with unfair charges.

Residents across East Cleveland and South Middlesbrough have said they feel “trapped” – paying rising estate fees with little transparency, no proper say, and no clear route for their streets to be adopted. Luke made clear that while consultations are ongoing, families want real change, not more delay.

This latest push is the culmination of months of pressure. Luke first raised fleecehold in Parliament last April, before hosting two resident roundtables over the summer in South Middlesbrough and Guisborough. He then took residents’ experiences straight to Government in a formal submission – warning ministers they needed a dedicated crackdown on fleecehold, not just leasehold reform. Since then, he’s kept up the pressure – grilling ministers in the Commons in January, listening to residents in Nunthorpe at a dedicated meeting on unadopted estates, meeting developers in Stainton, and tabling parliamentary questions to keep the issue firmly on the agenda.

Ministers have begun to move, with proposals on the table to curb the worst legal powers used against homeowners, force greater transparency over charges, and give residents new rights to challenge rogue management companies. But Luke made clear today: it’s not enough yet. He committed to keep pushing until residents get a fair deal.
