Residents in Guisborough today spoke with some of Cleveland Police’s new PCSOs and officers at their community safety drop-in at Sunnyfield House.

Dozens of extra neighbourhood officers and PCSOs have been rolled out across Cleveland – putting visible policing back on the streets. A total of 48 new neighbourhood police and PCSOs been deployed locally, part of a wider drive to crack down on the crimes people see every day.

Luke Myer MP has consistently pushed for tougher action on crime and more resources for community policing. Earlier this week, he again raised the issue of the police funding formula with the Policing Minister, saying:

“We have a small population but high deprivation, and the police funding formula does not take account of the severity of crime in our region.”

In response, the minister acknowledged “the current police funding formula is not fit for purpose” and it “needs reform”. She committed to “review the formula to bring it up to date and make it fit for purpose”.

Earlier this week, Luke also voted for the Crime & Policing Bill to progress to its next stage – which includes sweeping new powers to tackle crime, including scrapping the £200 “low-level theft” rule, introducing tough new Respect Orders to deal with persistent antisocial behaviour, and new protections for shopworkers facing abuse.

“People have had enough of feeling like nothing gets done. They want to see police in their communities, dealing with the problems right in front of them.

“This is about getting back to basics: visible policing, proper action, and making sure people feel safe where they live.”
