Today (9 February 2026) Luke Myer MP joined colleagues from the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties for a cross-party meeting with His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Nigel Casey CMG MVO, alongside the Minister for Europe and the Minister for the Armed Forces.
The session gave parliamentarians an up-to-date picture of the situation in Ukraine and the related security challenges facing the UK and its allies. While specific details cannot be disclosed, one of the issues raised was the scale of Russian information operations, including estimates that Russia is spending billions on state propaganda and information warfare.
Luke has repeatedly raised the threat of Russia-funded social media disinformation undermining UK democracy. In November, he called for greater enforcement against foreign disinformation; in December, he asked the Security Minister and Science, Innovation & Technology ministers for greater collaboration to address the threat; this week, he asked for updates from the cross-governmental Defending Democracy Taskforce on this area of work.
Speaking in Parliament this week, Luke Myer MP said:
“During last year’s election in Moldova, undercover reporters exposed a network of people who were being paid by Russia to produce disinformation content on social media platforms, including TikTok and Facebook. Does my hon. Friend agree that we are naive to assume that such things are not happening in this country, too?“
Alongside stronger safeguards from government and social media platforms, residents can protect themselves by being more alert online:
- checking where a story originally comes from (not just who shared it)
- questioning whether the source is established and trustworthy,
- and taking a moment to reflect before sharing content that provokes strong emotions.
