Luke Myer MP challenges Ministers on Russian threats to UK

Today (4 December 2025), Luke Myer MP has called for stronger action to tackle Russian interference after raising security concerns in Parliament. His intervention followed the publication of the Dawn Sturgess Inquiry report into the death of a British citizen from Russian nerve agent in 2018.

Speaking in the Commons, Luke warned that Russian activity is already affecting the UK. He highlighted the “Russian planes and ships [which] menace our air and waters” and the “cyber-attacks [which] have hit our NHS“. He pointed to the 2020 cyber-attack on Redcar and Cleveland Council as an example of how hostile actions reach directly into local communities. The National Cyber Security Centre has assessed that key members of the Russian hacking group responsible were likely to have been tasked by Russian Intelligence Services.

In Parliament, Luke asked the Security Minister to confirm that the British public should see the threat as immediate rather than distant.

Responding, Security Minister Dan Jarvis said:

“My hon. Friend is absolutely right about the threat. It is not a distant matter; it quite literally impacts the lives of our citizens every single day. I give him an assurance of how seriously we take these matters. “

Luke also pressed the Government on Russian disinformation – citing the example of a former Reform UK leader recently jailed for pro-Russian bribery. Luke has long criticised politicians for taking Russian-linked money.

Disinformation on social media in particular is an issue Luke has raised multiple times in Parliament. In a debate in September, he warned that “social media giants have built algorithms designed to keep us angry and afraid“, and last month expressed concern about “hostile states” exploiting this landscape with disinformation content “designed to divide us and undermine our democracy.” Following his question on the subject yesterday to DSIT/DCMS Minister Ian Murray MP, Luke requested Minister Jarvis work with DSIT to help disrupt hostile online activity.

Responding, Minister Jarvis said:

He is also right to raise the issue of misinformation and disinformation. Again, through the Defending Democracy Taskforce, these are matters that we keep under very close review. He is right to mention the important contribution that is required of DSIT. We work very closely with DSIT and other Government departments on these matters. We keep a constant vigilance. I think that, in truth, there is more that we need to do, and I will have further conversations with ministerial colleagues about that particular matter.

Luke will continue pressing for better protection for British citizens against hostile state activity.
