A new state-of-the-art living community for armed forces veterans is set to transform a long-vacant site in Boosbeck.
Luke Myer MP visited the Castle Court Veterans Village project in Boosbeck last week alongside Keith Rutherford from South Gare Developments Ltd, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council Armed Forces Champion, Cllr David Taylor and representatives from the Boosbeck Royal British Legion.
The project is converting an old disused nursing home, empty for 14 years, into a transitional, supported living community for armed forces veterans. The refurbished facility will offer up to 40 individual rooms, communal areas and outdoor space for gardening and activities, managed by the charity CVL. The project also seeks donations of furniture and essential items to help create welcoming and fully functional spaces for veterans.
The idea for the project began when Keith Rutherford, a local developer, heard about the Veterans Roundtable Luke hosted with Minister Al Carns in Guisborough earlier this year. Inspired by the discussions and the need for more tailored veteran support, the plan rapidly grew into a major refurbishment project with real community backing.
Luke Myer MP said:
“I have seen firsthand the incredible potential of Castle Court Veterans Village. Despite some concerns and misinformation circulating, it is a genuinely special project that will make a real difference for those who have served and for our community. I will continue working with local partners to ensure that veterans receive the respect and support they deserve.”
Keith Rutherford from South Gare Developments Ltd said:
“After hearing about the Veterans Roundtable with Minister Al Carns in Guisborough, we saw an opportunity to turn a neglected site into a vibrant, supportive community. This project is a testament to the power of local collaboration and the commitment to honouring those who have served.”
The site is on track to open later in the year, but is still seeking donations of furniture and essential household items to help make the new space welcoming and functional for its first residents. Anyone who can help is encouraged to get in touch with Castle Court directly.
Speaking in the House of Commons today (1 April), Luke updated Minister Carns on the project.
Minister Al Carns said:
“I absolutely support the Castle Court veterans village. I think it is a fantastic initiative.”
