Veterans Minister visits Guisborough to discuss mental health

Yesterday (6 February 2025), the Government’s Veterans Minister Alistair Carns visited Gisborough Hall for critical discussions on veteran mental health and suicide prevention.

The visit follows months of campaigning on the issue by Luke Myer MP, after the tragic death of Guisborough resident and former Royal Marine Sam Morgan.

The meeting, hosted by Luke and Anna Turley MP, brought together Sam’s family and friends, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council leader Alec Brown, Armed Forces Champion Dave Taylor, local East Cleveland veterans, and representatives from the NHS Op COURAGE service, to meet the Minister to discuss important improvements needed for veterans within the mental health system.

The discussions focused on the systemic challenges faced by veterans in crisis. Despite reaching out to multiple charities, his GP, and mental health services, Sam faced long waiting times, a lack of in-person support, and inconsistent communication.

Luke Myer MP has been working closely with Sam’s family and local veterans, has raised this issue in Parliament, and questioned the Ministry of Defence on mental health issues among armed forces veterans. Following the event today, he highlighted the urgent need for reform, saying:

“I am grateful to the Veterans Minister for listening to us, and keeping his promise to come and hear from Teesside veterans. Those who have served our country must be supported by it. Sam’s story must be a catalyst for real change – we need rapid, in-person support for veterans in crisis, not endless referrals and long waiting lists. This is about doing right by those who have done so much for us.”

Veterans Minister Alistair Carns acknowledged the concerns raised, stating:

“I am grateful to Luke and Anna for bringing me to Teesside to hear from local veterans and forces families. The stories I have heard today are deeply moving and highlight the need for us to provide the best possible mental healthcare services to our veterans.”

The meeting represents a significant step in the ongoing campaign to improve veteran mental health support. However, all agreed the meeting must lead to real change for veterans.
