Luke Myer MP has welcomed the government’s Spring Statement, which sets out plans to build a stronger economy, invest in vital public services and provide security for working people. The statement outlines measures to boost economic growth, protect household incomes and ensure public services like the NHS and schools get the funding they need.

The OBR has upgraded its growth projections, and confirmed that Labour’s reforms to the planning system will increase GDP by £6.8bn by 2029-30 and by £15.1bn within the next 10 years. This is the largest positive projected increase for any policy it has ever assessed in its history. The OBR also set out that it anticipates living standards will rise twice as fast under this parliament compared to the last.

Luke Myer MP said:

“This Spring Statement is about delivering real change, more jobs, stronger public services and support for families facing the cost of living. Economic stability is the foundation for everything we do. Without it, working people pay the price. That is why this government is taking responsible decisions to rebuild the economy and invest in our communities. We have restored stability to our public finances, with interest rates cut three times, and we are ensuring our fiscal rules are met two years early. Working people will always come first.”

“People in Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland need a government that gets things done. This plan is about delivering real results, lower waiting times, better schools and more money in people’s pockets. We are making the economy stronger so working people feel the benefits, both nationally and here in our community. We are also reforming welfare to ensure those who can work do so while protecting the most vulnerable, and investing £1.4bn in programmes that help people back into employment.”

The government has already delivered on key promises, including delivering two million more NHS appointments and support for working families through expanded free breakfast clubs in primary schools. With inflation falling and three interest rate cuts since taking office, the plan is working to bring stability and security to communities across the country.

The government has also increased the National Living Wage, giving three million people a pay rise from next week. At the same time, new measures will crack down on tax evasion, raising a further £1bn to fund vital public services.

After 14 years of Conservative failure, which doubled the national debt, Labour is delivering the economic renewal Britain needs.
