We are deeply concerned by reports that Jingye Group, the Chinese owners of British Steel have reject a generous offer from the Government. This development raises the possibility of impacts on workers at Lackenby and Skinningrove, as well as their families, and our communities.
Negotiations are ongoing, and we urge all parties to work in good faith to secure a positive outcome. This is not the end of negotiations and there is still a path to a deal, and we will do everything in our power to support those discussions and ensure the best possible future for our steel industry. Should talks fail, we stand ready to support anyone affected and will work tirelessly to ensure multi-agency support for those who need it.
Steel is not just an industry, it is part of our identity. For generations, steelworkers have been the backbone of our communities, and we are determined that they will remain so in the years ahead. We will always fight to protect our steel industry and the people who depend on it. We know there is a strong future for Teesside steel, and we will push the Government to ensure that its £2.5 billion steel fund and strategy deliver long-term investment and security for our region. We are demanding strong and decisive national intervention to safeguard the future of steelmaking in our region.
While today’s news is concerning, we reiterate that Teesside remains a place of real potential. Significant investment is already transforming our region, and every week we are having discussions with new potential investors interested in the skills, determination, and future of our incredible communities. We will never stop working to deliver a better, more secure future for our home and our people.

Notes for editors:
- Luke has consistently raised the issue of the Teesside steel industry in Parliament, met with Government Ministers, and called publicly for Government to “not be afraid to make the big fiscal choices required to protect” steel as “a strategically important industry” and put the industry “on a sure footing in the years ahead”.
