Luke Myer MP chairs industry roundtable on CO2 shipping and Job Creation

Luke Myer MP recently hosted a roundtable in Parliament that brought together key industry leaders from the carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) sector, the Association of British Ports (ABP), and the Cory Group. The session, focused on the future of CO2 shipping, explored the role of carbon capture in reducing emissions and creating job opportunities in coastal areas such as Teesside and the Humber.

As the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for CCUS, Luke Myer highlighted the critical importance of the technology in delivering good jobs across the UK. The roundtable also heard from representatives of key industry players, who shared their expertise and outlined the significant investment opportunities within the sector.

A key theme throughout the discussion was the importance of CO2 shipping – or non-pipeline transport (NPT) – which has the potential to open up new economic opportunities by enabling companies across the UK to access critical technology. Luke emphasised that the UK should not fall behind other nations, such as Norway, which are already investing heavily in this technology.

The roundtable participants agreed that with the right cross-border cooperation, particularly with European businesses, the UK could secure billions in private investment and create thousands of jobs. This would not only strengthen the UK’s position in the global clean energy market but also stimulate economic growth in key industrial regions. Last year, the UK Government committed up to £21.7 billion of funding over the next 25 years for Teesside and Merseyside, to develop the two CCUS industrial clusters. This investment is projected to create 4,000 high-quality jobs.
