Luke fights for Middlesbrough’s growing tech sector

Teesside’s rise as a key tech hub and the fight for more investment

30th June 2025

Following Middlesbrough’s recognition in the 2024 Tech Jobs Report as the UK’s fastest-growing tech destination, Luke Myer MP set out his commitment to ensuring the area receives the investment necessary to match this rapid growth and help transform the local economy.

In Parliament, Luke called for greater support for technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and the thriving digital and creative industries in the town. While the potential of these sectors in Teesside is vast, Luke stresses that the region now requires the right infrastructure and investment to fully unlock these opportunities.

He expressed gratitude for the recognition from ministers but remained firm in his resolve to continue fighting for Teesside’s future. During recent discussions in Parliament, Luke called on the government to bring investment in AI and digital industries to the region.

Speaking in Parliament, Luke Myer MP said:

“I am pleased that the Government has been listening to us and backing Teesside businesses with serious investment. I have been pushing for investment in clean power and advanced manufacturing – but last year, the 2024 UK Tech Jobs Report also named Middlesbrough as the UK’s fastest-growing tech destination. Will Ministers work with me to bring in investment in frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence to our region as well?”

In response, Jonathan Reynolds, Business Secretary, acknowledged Luke’s efforts and highlighted the immense potential of the tech and creative industries in Teesside, saying:

“My hon. Friend and his colleagues are incredible champions for bringing investment into the area, and I recognise and thank him for that support. He is right to say that some of the perhaps more traditional industries, though very exciting for the future, are not just the only story in his area. He has mentioned tech and the creative industries too, and I would say they are huge opportunities. Specifically, our investment in skills to make sure that there is a pipeline of talent in every part of the country is a formidable and significant contribution to delivering on those opportunities. I look forward to continuing to work with him on these issues.”

Middlesbrough and Teesside have the talent, ambition, and drive to succeed in the tech sector. With the right support and investment, the region can continue to grow its digital economy and unlock opportunities in cutting-edge technologies. Luke Myer MP remains committed to pushing for the investment Teesside deserves to ensure the region stays at the forefront of the UK’s tech revolution.
