Commemorations continue across East Cleveland with beacon lighting and remembrance events

Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, spent Bank Holiday Monday attending a series of community-led events to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. From Marton to Coulby Newham, residents came together to honour the sacrifices of those who served during the Second World War and to celebrate eight decades of peace.
In Marton, Luke joined a packed celebration at the community centre, where he met with Councillors Dorothy Davison and Jason McConnell. The event, which sold out, featured music, conversation, and reflections on the importance of remembrance.
At Coulby Manor Farm and Ladgate Woods, residents gathered for street parties, complete with homemade lemonade and games for children. Luke also visited parties at Bonnygrove Park in Marton West, Nunthorpe & Marton Playing Fields Association in Nunthorpe, and attended a moving commemoration at Marton Cricket Club, organised by the Middlesbrough Royal British Legion and the Marton War Memorial Group.
Reflecting on the day, Luke said: “It was a privilege to join so many local people in marking this important milestone. These events remind us of the courage and sacrifice of those who served, and of the strength of our communities in coming together to honour them.”
On Thursday 8 May, the official anniversary of VE Day, Luke will attend further commemorations. The day will culminate in the national ‘Lighting the Beacons with Flames of Peace’ tribute at 9:30pm. In East Cleveland, beacons will be lit at Birk Brow Bank near Guisborough and at Danby, courtesy of Cleveland Fire Brigade. These beacons, part of a nationwide initiative, symbolise the light of peace emerging from the darkness of war.
Luke added: “As we light the beacons on Thursday evening, we not only remember the past but also look to the future with hope. I encourage everyone to take part in these events and to reflect on the enduring importance of peace and unity.”
