Investment will upgrade one in six practices and deliver over eight million extra appointments each year
7th May 2025, Westminster
Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, has welcomed the Government’s announcement of a £102 million funding package to modernise and expand more than 1,000 GP surgeries across England. The upgrades will create new consultation rooms, improve patient flow and accessibility, and are expected to deliver up to 8.3 million additional appointments annually, easing waiting times and ending the eight o’clock scramble.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting said:
“It will be a long road, but this Government is putting in the work to fix our NHS and make it fit for the future. These are simple fixes for our GP surgeries, but for too long they were left to ruin, allowing waiting lists to build and stopping doctors treating more patients. It is only because of the necessary decisions we took in the Budget that we are able to invest in GP surgeries, start tackling the eight o’clock scramble and deliver better services for patients. The extra investment and reform this Government is making, as part of its Plan for Change, will transform our NHS so it can once again be there for you when you need it.”
Luke Myer MP said:
“This is good news for patients in Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland. Modernising our local surgeries will mean more appointments, shorter waits and a system that works for everyone.
“I will continue to press for further investment in primary care so families in our community can access the care they need without delay.”
