Luke Myer MP has praised Cleveland Police for ongoing efforts to tackle illegal off-road bikes, which have been a source of crime and antisocial behaviour in the community.

New data shows that since July, over 180 stolen or uninsured bikes have been recovered. This is a 50% increase from the start of the year.

In a recent operation in Middlesbrough in August, police recovered twelve motorbikes, three quad bikes, machetes, balaclavas, and Class A drugs. A 16-year-old boy was arrested in Hemlington in September and charged with multiple driving offences.

Luke Myer MP said:

“I commend our brave police officers on their recent action to seize these bikes, which have been a scourge on our communities in Hemlington.

“This clampdown with specialist drones and stingers to take these vehicles off our streets is exactly what residents have been calling for for years. It sends a clear message: crime will not be tolerated.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Matt Storey said:

“Off-road bikes have been a major problem in our local communities, not just because of the disruption and danger they cause, but because they are often linked to broader criminal activity. What’s critical is that we focus on gathering intelligence from the community about where these bikes are kept and who is involved.
