Luke Myer MP Visits ICL Boulby to Champion East Cleveland Jobs and UK Food Security

Local MP calls for continued support for East Cleveland’s world-leading polyhalite industry.

Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, visited ICL Boulby – the region’s largest private employer – to see firsthand the work being done to mine polyhalite, a unique mineral fertiliser with the potential to transform British agriculture and global food security.

The visit included an underground tour led by ICL Boulby’s Head of Mining, Richard Severn, and a look at the Boulby Underground Laboratory – a cutting-edge research facility focused on deep space science, introduced by Professor Sean Paling. Luke was joined by Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume.

East Cleveland is home to the world’s largest deposit of polyhalite, and the mine’s operations are helping put the UK at the forefront of sustainable crop nutrition. With increasing global demand for food and fertiliser security, the polyhalite industry is a key opportunity to support British farmers, reduce import reliance, and create good local jobs.

Luke Myer MP said:
“ICL Boulby is a cornerstone of our local economy – and with the world’s largest deposit of polyhalite right here in East Cleveland, this industry can make us a global leader in food security. I’ll keep working hard in Parliament to promote our area and fight for the long-term investment and support that both ICL Boulby and Woodsmith need to succeed.”
