New Southlands project praised in Parliament

Today (6 March 2025), Luke Myer MP spoke in Parliament about the “state-of-the-art new Southlands Centre sports facility coming to east Middlesbrough”.

Led by Middlesbrough’s Labour Council, in partnership with MFC Foundation which will relocate staff from its Riverside Stadium HQ to run the centre, the ambitious scheme will deliver top-class sports, education and community facilities.

It will provide a base for local grassroots football in east Middlesbrough , youth programmes, mentoring, employability training and more – supporting people of all ages to get active, gain new skills and connect with their community. Luke spoke about areas in his constituency such as Park End, and Ormesby, which will benefit from the scheme.

Luke also recognised the broad partnership which is delivering the project, saying:

Its delivery has been a team effort from our Labour council, the MFC Foundation and Sky Bet EFL, and has been signed off by the Labour Government.

Responding, Leader of the House of Commons Lucy Powell described the project as a “winning performance from a strong Labour team“.
